Description

The Press Room Chair was designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1958 for the UNESCO building in Paris. Rietveld designed the armchair as a comfortable lounge chair at the reading table for journalists in the press room. However, due to the tight budget and limited time, the design was not implemented and Rietveld was forced to replace it with furniture he had made earlier that year for the World Exhibition in Brussels. Fortunately, the original designs, drawings, and models have been preserved, so that the Press Room Chair was released in 2014.

Rietveld's handwriting is clearly recognizable in the clear lines of the Press Room Chair. Rietveld also applied the angle in which the seat and backrest are placed, in combination with the high-looking armrests, in his famous Red Blue chair.

The armchair can be upholstered in various fabrics and leathers. Thanks to the special finish with the double stitching, the sleek, clear surface distribution of the armchair is accentuated. The armrests can be made from oak, natural or black-stained, or American walnut. The swivel base is available in matte black or stainless steel and is equipped with a return mechanism so that the Press Room Chair always returns to its original position. To protect the floor, the swivel base is equipped with harness leather foot straps.

Although the armchair is the perfect place for relaxation, Rietveld was of the opinion that a chair was not by definition intended to rest in. On the bottom of every Press Room Chair there is a poem by the German poet Morgenstern, in which this idea is perfectly expressed.

The Press Room Chair is part of the Rietveld Originals collection that is exclusively conducted by Spectrum worldwide.
